Behind the Notes

Why Some Stories Are Told Before Sunset and After Dark

I've always been fascinated by how the same story can feel completely different depending on when we encounter it.

There are some thoughts that belong to the day. They live in movement, possibility, and the feeling that something is still unfolding. They accompany us as we work, create, dream, and take steps toward the future we hope to build.

Then there are the thoughts that arrive at night.

When the world becomes quieter and the distractions begin to fade, we often find ourselves returning to questions we didn't have time to ask during the day. We revisit memories. We reflect on conversations. We think about where we've been, where we're going, and who we're becoming along the way.

That contrast became the inspiration behind the Before Sunset and After Dark collections.

While the Echo Mixes explore stories through different musical styles, the Sync Lanes explore something slightly different. They explore how a story feels when experienced in different moments of life. The story itself doesn't change, but our perspective often does.

Before Sunset was born from the energy of possibility. Influenced by Hip-Hop indie-pop and Afro-inspired sounds, these songs carry movement within them. They are rooted in growth, ambition, resilience, and the belief that there is still more to discover just beyond the horizon.

When I think about Before Sunset, I think about the journey itself. I think about taking another step forward, even when the destination isn't completely clear. I think about the courage it takes to keep moving, to keep believing, and to keep building something meaningful one day at a time.

These songs are not concerned with looking back. They are focused on what might still be ahead.

After Dark emerged from a very different emotional space.

There is a certain honesty that only seems to arrive when the day is over. The expectations fall away, the noise quiets down, and we are left alone with our thoughts. Those moments can be uncomfortable, but they can also be deeply revealing.

Inspired by jazz influences and late-night reflection, After Dark explores the conversations we have with ourselves when there is no audience. It is a space for vulnerability, remembrance, healing, and truth. Not because it seeks answers, but because it is willing to sit with the questions.

Some of the most important lessons in life don't arrive in moments of certainty. They arrive in moments of reflection. They arrive when we are willing to listen.

What connects these two collections is the understanding that they are not opposites. They are companions.

The person chasing a dream before sunset is the same person reflecting on that journey after dark. The hope that carries us forward during the day often becomes the wisdom we carry into the night. One perspective helps us move. The other helps us understand.

Together, Before Sunset and After Dark represent two sides of the same storytelling philosophy that runs throughout the Echoes of Jaye catalogue.

Every story contains movement and reflection. Every journey contains both ambition and understanding. We need the light that helps us see where we're going, and we need the quiet that helps us make sense of where we've been.

Because every story changes with the light.

And sometimes the things we discover after dark help us welcome the next sunrise with new eyes.

The Echo Mixes: One Story, Many Sounds

When I started building the Echoes of Jaye catalogue, I wasn't thinking about mix lanes, colours, or collections.

I was thinking about stories.

Every song begins the same way for me. It starts with a lyric, a feeling, a memory, or a question that refuses to leave me alone. The story always comes first. Everything else comes later.

As the catalogue grew, I began to notice something interesting. The same story could take on a completely different character depending on how it was presented.

A song carried by Afrobeat rhythms felt different from that same song wrapped in piano-led R&B. A message of resilience could feel uplifting in one arrangement and deeply reflective in another. The lyrics hadn't changed, but the emotional journey had.

That realization became the beginning of the Echo Mixes.

The Echo Mixes were never created simply to produce alternate versions of songs. They grew out of a curiosity about perspective. I wanted to explore how the same story could be experienced through different sounds while remaining true to its heart.

Over time, those musical pathways began to develop their own identities.

Echo Groove emerged through Afrobeat influences, bringing movement, rhythm, and energy to the stories it touched.

Echo Drop found its voice through House and Afrosoul influences, creating space for release, lift, and transformation.

Echo Flow settled naturally into a chilled R&B, neo-soul vibe allowing songs to breathe and giving the lyrics room to carry the emotion.

As these collections evolved, they developed their own colours and visual identities as well. What started as a creative experiment slowly became part of the language of the catalogue itself.

What I love most about the Echo Mixes is that they remind me that stories are never one-dimensional. The same experience can feel hopeful and uncertain at the same time. A lesson can feel painful while also becoming a source of growth. A memory can make us smile and ache in the very same moment.

Music has a unique way of holding all of those truths together.

That's what the Echo Mixes are really about.

They aren't separate stories. They are different perspectives on the same story. Different ways of exploring the same emotional landscape. Different sounds that reveal different shades of meaning.

Because sometimes the story doesn't need to change.

Sometimes we simply need to hear it differently.

Why Are There Many Voices

The Echoes of Jaye catalogue is expressed through distinct vocal personas. Each voice represents a different part of the songwriter's journey, revealing unique perspectives on love, loss, healing, growth, faith, and self-discovery.

While the voices may differ, they all originate from the same creative source and remain connected to the same journey.

AI + Human Creativity and Direction

How technology supports the creative process.

Echoes of Jaye uses an AI-integrated production process guided by original lyric writing, creative direction, and artistic decision-making. Songs begin with concepts, themes, lyrics, emotional objectives, and creative briefs. Decisions relating to song structure, mood, arrangement direction, vocal interpretation, revisions, artwork, and final release selection remain guided by human creative judgement.

Technology supports the production process, while storytelling, emotional authenticity, and creative vision remain at the centre of every release.

Creative development is documented through project records, creative briefs, lyric creation, and AuthentiTrack registrations where applicable. These records help preserve the creative history behind each release, providing a documented timeline of ideas, development, and authorship.

From early concepts and lyric drafts to finished recordings, documentation forms part of the creative process. It helps maintain transparency, supports rights management, and creates a lasting record of how each project evolved from initial inspiration to release.

From Words To Music

Before Echoes of Jaye became a music project, there was writing. Many lyrics begin as poems, journal entries, observations, and unfinished thoughts. The transition from page to song allows those stories to be experienced through melody, voice, and sound.

New releases still begin the same way they always have: with words on a page, searching for the right voice, melody, and emotion to bring them to life.

The Creative Vision

It Started With Words

Echoes of Jaye began with words. What started as private reflections became songs, collections, and creative worlds built around emotion and storytelling. Each release begins with a story. The music simply gives that story a voice.

Echoes of Jaye continues to grow through new songs, new voices, and new stories, but the purpose remains unchanged: to create music that connects through soul, story, and sound.
